Description
The beam cage is a system of intersecting load-bearing beams, classified into three types depending on their arrangement: simplified, normal, and complicated.
The simplified beam cage transfers the load from the decking to beams, usually arranged parallel to the short side of the flooring with the spacing of the decking beams, and then to vertical load-bearing structures. This design is used in civil non-frame buildings with small loads and spans.
In industrial buildings, normal and complicated beam cages are most commonly used. In a normal beam cage, the load is transferred from the decking to the main beams, which then rest on vertical load-bearing structures. In a complicated beam cage, additional auxiliary beams are introduced between the decking beams and the main beams, transferring the load to the columns. In this case, the load is transferred over the greatest distance.
The choice of beam cage type depends on the connection of the beams to each other in height. The floor connection is simple and convenient for installation but requires a large construction height. A reduced connection and a connection at the same level allow for the greatest height of the main beam given a specified construction height of the flooring. The reduced connection is most often used in complicated beam cages.
