Overview of Drills

Drills are cutting tools designed to form holes in solid material. During drilling, two movements are performed: rotational - around the tool axis and translational - along the tool axis. Drills are also used to drill predrilled holes.

Spiral drills were most widely used in industry. They are used when drilling holes with a diameter of 0.25 to 80 mm in various materials. In cases where increased tool stiffness is required, such as hard forging drilling, feather drills are also used. They are the simplest in design. Their disadvantages: poor direction in the machined hole and difficult working conditions. Special centering drills are used to drill center holes. Centering simple drills are similar in design to conventional spiral drills, but the total length of their working part is less. They are used in the processing of high-strength materials, when centering combined drills often break.

Deep hole machining uses drills for continuous and circular drilling. The easiest drill for deep drilling is cannon. This drill is, as it were, a half-cylinder and has one major cutting edge constituting a right angle with the drill axis. Drill has cylindrical surface for guiding along hole. The drill works in tense conditions and is not productive. A gun drill is more perfect than a gun drill. Such drills are used for processing deep holes with increased requirements for accuracy of diameter and straightness of the axis. It has a better direction and has greater stability. By pressurizing directly to the cutting edge through the internal coolant opening, chip removal is improved.

When treating conical holes with a small taper (about 1:50), conical drills are used.

Conclusion

In the course design, a splined drawing for pulling the splined hole was calculated and designed according to the calculations (Fig. 5). Dependent elements were calculated, vibration resistance was calculated and a special spiral drill was designed (Fig. 6).

The A1 sheet shows a designed splined link.

A special spiral drill is shown on the A3 sheet.
