Calculation of worm cutter .

1. Select Mill Design

A worm tooth-cutting cutter is a shell multi-blade cutting tool designed to cut the teeth of cylindrical wheels on tooth-cutting machines. They are rough (multi-start) and finished normal and high (precision) accuracy. Finishing cutters are made only single-start. By design, worm mills are solid (with a module of up to 10 mm) and prefabricated (with a module of 8 to 25 mm).

Therefore, we will design a finished single-start worm mill of normal accuracy to ensure the required accuracy of the product.

2. Tool Surface

The tool surface of the worm cutter is the helical surface of the initial theoretical involute worm, the axis of which is inclined to the end of the processed spur wheel by an angle equal to the angle of lifting of the helical guide of this worm αmo [stitches].

The technology for making worm cutters is based on replacing the theoretical initial involute worm with an equivalent archimedean worm, as a more technological one. This profiling method is used for finishing worm cutters. Archimedean worm has rectilinear generatrix in its axial section, which makes it possible to maintain rectilinear cutting edge of cutter at reels.

The angle of the profile of the Archimedean worm can be determined by analytical calculation or graphical constructions [stitches].

As a result, when replacing the involute worm with the Archimedean, the least error in the profile of the cut wheels is achieved compared to the convolute worm.

Preferably, therefore, worm mills are made on the basis of an Archimedean worm.
