Introduction
During the operation of the car, its working property gradually deteriorates due to wear of parts. A car that meets all the requirements of the regulatory and technological documentation is considered serviceable. A workable car, unlike a serviceable one, must meet only those requirements that make it possible to use it for its intended purpose without a threat to traffic safety. Damage is the transition of cars to faulty, but to functional condition. Failure is the transition of the car to an inoperable state. The current repair of the car is carried out at motor enterprises, it must ensure the guaranteed operability of the car during the mileage of another regular scheduled repair. With long-term operation of the car, a condition is reached when their repair under ATP conditions becomes impossible or economically impractical, in which case they are sent to a car repair plant.
About 7075% of car parts received for major repairs can be re-delivered either without repair or after their restoration. These include most of the most complex and expensive parts, as well as shafts, axles, trunnions and others. The cost of restoring these parts does not exceed 1050% of the cost of their manufacture, while achieving great savings in metal and energy resources.
If you look into the Rules of the Road and find a list of faults in which further movement of the car is prohibited (paragraph 2.3.1.), then in the first place is an inoperable braking system, and steering is only in the second place. Objectively, this is wrong, with certain skills in driving a car in an emergency, you can stop without brakes. But when the steering fails, the consequences will be much worse than if the brakes failed.
To prevent this nightmare from happening to us, you just need to remember the seriousness of the consequences of steering failures and listen to your feelings during the movement of the car. Sounds and vibrations usually suggest the location of the "sick" organ of the car. And if there is a suspicion of a malfunction in the steering, then you should immediately, independently or with the help of a specialist, find this malfunction and eliminate it.
Check of technical condition.
Wash the steering crankcase cavities and all metal parts in kerosene. Wash rubber parts with warm water and wipe them with clean rag.
Carefully examine if there are wear marks, burrs or hairlines on the working surfaces of gear (5) and rack (13). Repair minor damages with fine-grained emery paper or velvet filler. Replace worn and damaged parts.
Ball bearing (6) must rotate freely, without jamming on the surface of rings and balls there should be no wear and traces of jamming. Needles and race of roller bearing (4) must have no wear and damages. If in the slightest doubt, replace the bearings.
Check condition of protective cover (20) and caps. If they have cracks, breaks and loose fit on the parts, replace them with new ones.
Check the condition of ball joints of steering rods by axial and radial clearance. If there is a free stroke in the ball joint or dirt, sand got into it, as well as when corrosion occurs on the ball pin and when the stroke of the thrust insert is fully used, replace the hinge assembly with the tie-rod tip.
Check condition of rubber-metal joints of tie-rod tips. Replace worn and damaged joints.
Check the condition of the rack support bushing (2) and its fit in the steering case. Replace the damaged bushing.
Check the condition of the elastic coupling of the steering shaft, paying attention to the strength of the rivet joint, the condition of the splines at the lower flange and the condition of the rubber part of the coupling.
If rivet joint loosens, replace rivets. If splines wear, replace lower flange. Cracks and delaminations on the rubber part of the coupling are not allowed; in these cases, replace the coupling.
If the gap in the rivet joint of the coupling cannot be eliminated by replacing the rivets, replace the elastic coupling assembly with the rudder shaft.
Replace the rack stop sealing rings, drive gear bearing nuts and rubber rings of the rack support bushing with new ones regardless of their technical condition. Clamps, lock washer 11 and lock plate 23 are also used once.

Process refers to the part of the production process during which the state of the object being repaired is changed sequentially.
The steering mechanism entering the section is disassembled into units. The subassemblies are parsed into parts and sent for defect.
The designed parts are divided into three groups: unsuitable, repairable, suitable. Repairable parts are sent for repair and restoration, unsuitable parts - for disposal. Suitable, repaired and new parts from the warehouse are assembled and assembled.
From the units, the steering mechanism is assembled, which is then adjusted.
Conclusion
Everyone knows the expression: "The best treatment is prevention." Therefore, each time, communicating with your car from below (on the viewing pit or trestle), one of the first things to do is to check the elements of the steering gear and mechanism. Fortunately, the times of universal deficits have passed, and there is an opportunity to acquire high-quality details, and not those many-numerical fakes that fail after a week of operation, as was the case in the recent past.
Driving style, road condition and timely maintenance play a decisive role in the durability of car parts and assemblies. All this affects the service life of steering parts. When the driver constantly pulls the steering wheel, spins it in place, jumps on pits and arranges off-road races - there is intense wear and tear of all the articulated connections of the drive and parts of the steering mechanism.
