Starter drive

The starter drive is a mechanism of the internal combustion engine starting system that serves as the link between the electric starter and the engine flywheel.  1

Main functions of the starter drive:

• Connecting the starter to the engine to transfer torque from the starter electric motor to the crankshaft flywheel.
• Protecting the starter from overload after the engine starts. Increased rotation speed is dangerous for the starter, so after a successful engine start, its flywheel must disconnect from the starter.

Structurally, the starter drive combines three mechanisms:

1. Flywheel drive gear.
2. Overrunning clutch (or freewheel clutch).
3. Lever or fork of the drive with a rod, bushing, or engagement clutch of the drive.

The drive lever, connected to the starter solenoid, brings the drive to the engine flywheel, ensuring engagement of the gear with the ring. The drive gear transmits torque from the starter to the flywheel ring. The overrunning clutch ensures the transfer of torque from the starter rotor to the gear at the moment of engine start and disconnects the drive and flywheel after a successful engine start.
