Description
Runners (runner bowls or Chilean mills) are a type of disc mill. They originate from the "arastra", used in ancient gold mining in Mexico (heavy boulders were dragged along the stone-paved bottom of a round bowl with a horse drive). The main patents for modern runners were issued in the 1850s. They have a horizontal disc base in the shape of the bottom of the bowl, accommodating the working space. In runners with a rotating base, the drive mechanism transmits rotation to the central shaft of the bowl on the underside, and 2 rollers, or runners, mounted on fixed horizontal axes, receive rotation due to friction.
