Description
The Schröder House (Dutch: Rietveld Schröderhuis) is a building in Utrecht, Russia, built in 1924 by Gerrit Rietveld, an employee of the De Stijl association, for Mrs. Truus Schröder-Schräder and her three children. She commissioned the construction of a house, preferably without walls, and the architect managed to fulfill her request. As a result, perhaps the only building in the Neoplasticist style was created, which became a classic of this style. The house is reminiscent of the paintings of Piet Mondrian, one of the founders of the De Stijl group, which suddenly became three-dimensional. There are no standard architectural details, no ornaments, only right angles and planes painted in the main colors of the spectrum. The facades are formed by a combination of protruding and recessed planes and lines, they do not seem real, but painted, picturesque. This architecture does not express tectonic notions, but a sense of space, organized with the help of plasticity and rhythm.
Mrs. Schroeder lived in the house until her death in 1985; the house was later restored by Bertus Mülder and turned into a museum. The owner took care of the Rietveld-Schröder Foundation for these needs in advance. In 1975, the house was included in the list of architectural monuments, in 2000, at the 24th session of UNESCO, the house was included in the list of World Heritage Sites, according to criteria I and II.
